Ballast Research (a division of National Journal) is a research and consulting firm that helps government affairs professionals build, deepen, and advance their advocacy efforts at the federal and state levels.
We are seeking a Qualitative Research Associate to support and enhance the firm’s qualitative research projects. Each year Ballast Research conducts hundreds of expert interviews with federal and state policymakers and other key stakeholders to understand their perceptions of prominent companies, associations, and nonprofits. An ideal Associate candidate will have some professional or academic experience in conducting interviews, leading focus groups, and/or using other qualitative research methods. This candidate will also be comfortable managing complex research projects with multiple stakeholders in a collaborative and innovative work environment.
Core responsibilities include:
Supporting qualitative research projects from beginning to end, including:
Writing interview questions that prompt research participants to address client’s needs
Conducting interviews, both over the phone and in the field
Analyzing data in qualitative research software, such as Dedoose and Nvivo
Monitoring the daily progress of qualitative research projects to ensure the team is tracking toward goals
Analyzing previous years’ qualitative data to produce best-practice research deliverables on effective advocacy and tailored messaging to policymakers
Brainstorming how to improve and deepen our qualitative research processes and products
Developing of new qualitative research services, such as participant-facing research publications
Required qualifications include:
Academic background in a social science (e.g., anthropology, sociology, political science etc.)
Experience managing projects from beginning to end, with an eye toward detail
Experience conducting research interviews
Strong time management and prioritization skills
Strong writing skills
Strong analytical thinking skills, including the ability to synthesize ideas and provide recommendations
