Quartz seeks a reporter to shape its coverage of China’s rapidly changing technology sector, with a focus on producing original takes on the news, scoops, and analysis.
Based in Hong Kong, you would be part of the growing Quartz team worldwide, and help shape our efforts to take a bracingly creative approach to covering business news within a global context. Developing fresh ways to look at technology and tech trends and translating them into interesting, provocative articles, with a solid grounding in data, is a central challenge of this job.
This position will heavily focus on companies and people based in mainland China, from giants like Alibaba and Tencent, to the next generation of BAT, and major startups like Bytedance and Pinduoduo.
You will keep readers informed of the progress Chinese companies are making in their quest to become truly global, identify people who deserve more attention, see around corners to where the tech business in China is heading, point to the effects of the complicated dance between China’s leadership with its tech giants, and surface detailed examples that help readers understand what’s important in the tech sphere in China and why. We'd want you to be both excited about the potential of technology as well as critical—and creative—in your coverage of them.
While the focus is business news, we’d look to you to tell our readers what it’s like to experience Chinese technology as a consumer and a citizen—which includes the world of live-streaming, the battle to be the everything app, a divide between big cities and small towns, and the worrying advances of online censorship and offline surveillance.
The successful candidate will have substantial professional reporting experience, a facility with data, an entrepreneurial approach to their work, and the ability to convey curiosity and humor in their writing. The reporter should feel comfortable with using formats other than 700-word articles (such as shorter pieces, photos, and charts) when they’re better for efficiently and effectively getting a story across, and be excited about writing daily and quickly. Mandarin proficiency is vital for the role, and mainland reporting experience is a plus.
