Senior Counsel

Quartz is looking for a pragmatic, business-minded, attorney with experience in IP to join our legal team in NYC. Reporting to and serving as the General Counsel's right hand, this individual will collaborate closely with senior leaders of our revenue, marketing, and product teams to shape legal and business strategy. As part of a small in-house legal team, this attorney will be exposed to other dynamic areas of law including first amendment, privacy, employment, securities, international and more.

The core responsibility will be leading our commercial contracting practice -- drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a wide variety of deals, including marketing agreements, client SOWs, licensing agreements, revenue partnerships, and vendor and service agreements, as well as training managers and staff in our practices and policies.  

In addition, this attorney will:

  • Partner with the sales, marketing, technology, and product teams to identify goals, develop guidelines, update policies, and deliver training to ensure best practices, minimize risk, and promote a streamlined legal review process
  • Handle all independent contractor agreements
  • Provide pre-publication review and advice to editorial teams (including video team) on copyright, trademark, and fair use issues
  • Research and stay current on changes in the law and industry practices in digital media and digital advertising
  • Oversee outside counsel on specific matters

The recruitment standard is high – someone of exceptional talent as demonstrated in his or her educational and professional credentials.  Other attributes that may make someone a fit for this role include:

  • A natural bent toward collaborative, solutions-oriented problem-solving.
  • Comfort interacting with all levels of business professionals, including senior management and domestic and international colleagues at other business units.
  • A passion for media and curiosity about the changing digital media landscape;
  • Licensing experience in the media or entertainment industries and/or experience with advertising, marketing and sales organizations;
  • Sound business and legal judgment;  
  • Ability to creatively and efficiently accomplish business goals while managing legal risk
  • Mid to large sized firm training and/or in-house experience.

Required:

  • New York bar membership
  • Minimum of 3-5 years post-JD experience.
