Data Visualization Journalist,

CityLab, The Atlantic’s sister site devoted to the most pressing issues and innovative ideas shaping cities and neighborhoods, is looking for an exceptional data journalist who can lead and grow our visual storytelling. We are looking for a self-starter who can both produce his or her own stories and collaborate with other reporters. The journalist will be part of a collaborative and scrappy team working to expand the reach and breadth of CityLab’s work. In particular, you would help us build on our work using geography and place to tell stories.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conceive of and produce visually led stories (and occasionally just data-based stories).
  • Work with other journalists and editors to support reporting that requires data visualizations.
  • Support and train fellow staff members on data and data visualization tools.

Qualifications of the ideal candidate:

  • Familiarity and aptitude with data visualization tools, in particular GIS and mapping.
  • Aptitude in using code to find stories in data, be it with Python, R, or another programming language.
  • Ability to think numerically and statistically.
  • At least two years of experience as a journalist or equivalent position, and one focused on data visualizations.
  • Strong writing and communication skills: You know how to turn interesting numbers, facts, and geolocational information into digestible stories.

You'll get noticed if you have:

  • An affinity for and experience with maps.
  • A track record of turning great story ideas and reporting into sharp and clearly defined visual products.
  • An aptitude for finding the best medium for a story, whether it be text, illustration, or map.
  • A sensibility and vision for how to make stories about localities, geography, and place resonate for a broad national and international audience.
  • Experience coding data interactives for the web using Javascript, preferably with familiarity of visualization libraries like d3.js.
  • Particular interest or expertise in cities, localities, or related topics.
  • A collaborative attitude.
  • Tons of ideas and the ability to execute them creatively.

CityLab has offices in Washington, D.C., and New York City, but candidates in other locations may be considered. Please submit a résumé, cover letter, and three clips.

Atlantic Media Values:

  • Force of Ideas: At the center of Atlantic Media work are the ideas within our writing. We believe that ideas – to the good and not – have consequence. Our highest work is bringing rigor, insight, intellectual honesty, to that ultimate purpose of separating the bad from the good, giving voice, argument, and flight to the latter.
  • Spirit of Generosity: Atlantic Media seeks in its ranks a spirit of generosity – a natural disposition in each colleague toward service and selfless conduct. Atlantic Media writing should be cut from the same cloth – critical on the merits but informed by charity and forbearance in measuring motive and personal character.
