We’re looking for an editor to lead Quartz’s journalism in Europe.
Based in London, this is one of our most senior editorial positions. It involves supervising a growing team of writers and editors in London and on the continent, with the goal of expanding Quartz’s coverage in Europe and expanding its readership in the region and worldwide.
Quartz is a digitally native news outlet founded in 2012. In four years it has grown from 20 to 200 employees, with full-time editorial staff in five US cities and nine other countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia. We pride ourselves on producing high-quality, intellectually ambitious journalism about the global economy in a spirit of bracing creativity and experimentation, using all the digital tools on offer.
As Europe editor, you will be involved in every aspect of Quartz’s journalism, including assigning and editing stories, planning coverage for the short and long term, managing reporters and editors, supervising production of our daily email newsletters and breaking-news app, monitoring analytics, working with the audience-development team, coordinating with colleagues in other regions, and shaping Quartz’s strategy globally. You will represent Quartz in the region on television and radio, at events, and in conversations with partners. You will also be encouraged to have your own areas of intellectual and journalistic interest, and to write/create regularly, as time allows.
We’re looking for someone who will lead and inspire the team through energy, curiosity, creativity, intellectual rigor, and openness to new ideas. The ideal applicant will possess an obsessive interest in news, a good knowledge of world affairs, a background in business or economic reporting, experience working in more than one country, knowledge of foreign languages, facility with data, a love of clear writing, and fluency in traditional reporting and editing methods, as well as a deep understanding of strategies and tactics for producing journalism that can find a broad readership online, and familiarity with the rhythms of digital media and the tools of the internet. The ability to juggle and prioritize multiple responsibilities, communicate well, and think on your feet will be essential. Experience in editing and leading reporters is a sine qua non.
To apply, please submit a cover letter, resume, and five links to relevant work that you have written or edited.
Across Atlantic Media, generally, the firm looks for two “pillar gifts” in its candidates. In all of us, these are more aspirational than actual, but they are central in our intentions.
1. Force of Intellect - Atlantic Media seeks a discipline and rigor of thought as manifested, often, in exceptional academic performance and, later, success in a professional environment.
2. Spirit of Generosity - Equally, Atlantic Media seeks what we term a spirit of generosity – a natural disposition towards service and selfless conduct.
Atlantic Media strives to be an equal opportunity employer of ethnic minorities, women, and people with disabilities.
